Approval of proposal for new computer Report of City Manager 10/31/80 <br /> system and applications software Report of Director of Finance 10/27/80 <br /> Report of Assistant Director of Finance 10/27/80 <br /> In response to questions, Director of Finance <br /> Ference advised that the anticipated life of <br /> the computer acquired in 1972 (IBM 370/115) <br /> was seven years; that there have been many <br /> changes in computer technology since that <br /> time; that the proposed system should meet <br /> City needs for at least five years; that the <br /> cost is much greater than anticipated when a <br /> new system was first proposed; and that a <br /> lease purchase arrangement would be the most <br /> financially advantageous for the City, leaving <br /> City funds to be invested at a higher rate <br /> than the interest paid. <br /> Assistant Director of Finance Becker also re- <br /> plied to questions concerning the expansion <br /> capabilities of the present and proposed <br /> systems; the fact that expansion of the pro- <br /> posed system would be undertaken only where <br /> costs might justify it; the manner in which <br /> CRMC (Computer Resources Management Corporation) <br /> provides application software, including re- <br /> quired modifications; the desirability of <br /> having multiple data input stations; the fact <br /> that certain restricted information would not <br /> be accessible to all users, such as police <br /> records; the response time for any failures of <br /> the proposed equipment; and where some savings <br /> might be expected to occur. <br /> City Manager Fales commented concerning the <br /> volume of data processing activity demanded of <br /> the City; the real need for decision-making <br /> information promptly; the intention of selling <br /> time and generating some revenue from SBSA and <br /> the Port; improving capabilities of the Police <br /> Reg.Mtg. <br /> 11/3/80 <br /> 410' 11/3/80 <br /> 5 <br />
