9.A. - Page 14 <br /> Discovering Heritage through Historic Places: Opportunities for children to learn about local <br /> heritage in the schools, through either established curriculum or special outreach activities: <br /> Annual Historic Tours for Redwood City Seventh Graders <br /> Each May, since 1995,the Historic Resources Advisory Committee has provided to all public school 7th <br /> graders in Redwood City tours of historic resources in downtown Redwood City. This program is part <br /> of the City's participation in National Historic Preservation Month. <br /> Communication of the program to the public includes a City proclamation for National Historic <br /> Preservation Month in early May, information on the City's website about the program and brochures <br /> for the public. The program,which costs approximately$3500 each year, is funded by donations from <br /> individuals,the business community, service clubs, and grants. <br /> The tours include bus transportation for approximately 800 participating children, docent-led tours of <br /> three significant historic resources in downtown Redwood City, and lunch,provided by the local <br /> Optimist Club. <br /> Sites included in the tour are Lathrop House, a Steamboat Gothic house built in 1863;the grand County <br /> Courthouse,completed in 1910, and the Fox Theater, opened in 1929, all of which are listed on the <br /> National Register of Historic Places. <br /> 4.C, Category 2: Protecting Historic Resources <br /> ▪ A local governmental body, such as a board or a commission, charged with leading historic <br /> preservation activities within the community <br /> ▪ An adopted community-wide historic preservation plan that is being implemented <br /> ▪ A historic preservation review ordinance and volunteer or professional staff to implement it <br /> A local governmental body, such as a board or a commission, charged with leading historic <br /> preservation activities within the community: <br /> The Historic Resources Advisory Committee (H.R.A.C.)consists of five members appointed by the <br /> Planning Commission for terms of three years. The H.R.A.C. was established by Ordinance No. 1815 <br /> effective March 10, 1980 with no term being set for members, and amended by Ordinance No. 1923 <br /> January 6, 1986 to establish terms of office. <br /> Its purpose is to advocate the preservation and appropriate rehabilitation of historically significant <br /> properties and structures as set forth in the Historic Resources Element of the General Plan. The key <br /> duty of the H.R.A.C. is to make recommendations to the Planning Commission which relate to the <br /> City's Historic Preservation Ordinance; and include the following goals: <br /> • Safeguard the City's heritage by providing for the protection of landmarks representing <br /> significant elements of its history. <br /> • Encourage public knowledge,understanding, and appreciation of Redwood City's role in local <br /> and regional history. <br /> • Foster civic and neighborhood pride and a sense of identity based on the recognition and use of <br /> historic and cultural resources. <br /> PRESERVE AMERICA COMMUNITIES PROGRAM:2015 COMMUNITY APPLICATION Page 10 of 21 <br />
