To determine ethnicity, we <br /> surname matched registered voter files which results in those with a surname listed in one of our <br /> surname dictionaries to be tagged with a particular ethnicity or origin. We are able to match <br /> surnames in the following categories: Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Japanese, Korean, Latino, and <br /> Vietnamese. The 'Other' category refers to voters with surnames that were not listed in the <br /> dictionaries. We are unable to distinguish by race as there is no difference between surnames of <br /> Blacks and Whites. <br /> The data show relatively little differences between the two elections for each jurisdiction for <br /> either Party ID or ethnicity. It is clear that the electorate changed somewhat during that time. <br /> There were four years between the Davis elections that we analyzed and seven years between the <br /> elections in West Sacramento. California is a high-mobility state and in particular during the <br /> mid to late 2000s, some areas in Yolo saw significant changes due to the foreclosure crises. The <br /> Sacramento area was dramatically affected by this phenomenon. Davis, on the other hand, has a <br /> 35 <br />
