Neither the race nor the ethnicity of the registrant are collected on the voter registration form thus other methods have to be employed to ascertain these data. To determine ethnicity, we surname matched registered voter files which results in those with a surname listed in one of our surname dictionaries to be tagged with a particular ethnicity or origin. We are able to match surnames in the following categories: Chinese, Filipino, Indian, Japanese, Korean, Latino, and Vietnamese. The 'Other' category refers to voters with surnames that were not listed in the dictionaries. We are unable to distinguish by race as there is no difference between surnames of Blacks and Whites. The data show relatively little differences between the two elections for each jurisdiction for either Party ID or ethnicity. It is clear that the electorate changed somewhat during that time. There were four years between the Davis elections that we analyzed and seven years between the elections in West Sacramento. California is a high-mobility state and in particular during the mid to late 2000s, some areas in Yolo saw significant changes due to the foreclosure crises.
