� , " � RJC:ek:2/27/61-YO <br /> ., <br /> ORDI �TANCE NO. 997 <br /> Ald E?RUINA.NCE APPROEPRIATING $4, 382. 50 FRtxK INDEMNITY <br /> FUI1D FE�#t THE PURPOSE 0�` RESTO�tING TF� REDA00� CITY <br /> GR�SS ON CALIFC7RNIA i+tTAY <br /> TFiE COUNCIL OF RED�TOp� CITY DO�S ORDAIN AS FQLL�TS: <br /> '�iAEREAS, in the early part of the year 1929, without public <br /> expense, a large cross was erected by private persons on a <br /> prominent knoll to the immediate west of the City of Redwood <br /> City, a cross then claimed to be "the largest cross of its type <br /> in the world" ; and, <br /> WHEREAS, for over thirty years the Redwood City cross <br /> stood in this prominent location and during such time became <br /> identified with the City of Redwood City in the eyes of local <br /> citizens, travelers, visitors and the people of the surrounding <br /> area; and, <br /> j�HF.RF.AS� the unique size, location, and distinctive <br /> appearance of the Redwood City cross caused it to become a well <br /> known physical landmark of Redwood City and southern San Mateo <br /> County; a landmark which identified and called attention to the <br /> Redwood City area; and, <br /> WF�RE�S, on the night of October 30, 1960, the Redwood City <br /> cross was destroyed by vandals; and, <br /> j�HF.RF.A!�� the City of Redwood City has received indemnity <br /> for the loss of said structure in the amount of four thousaad <br /> five hundred dollars ($4, 500) from its insurance carrier; and, <br /> �REAS, various private citizens, as private citizens and <br /> not on behalf of any particular religious sect or creed, have <br /> commenced a public subscription campaign for restoration of the <br /> cross on its original site; and, <br /> WI�REAS, these citizens have requested the City of Redwood <br /> City to permit said site to be used for said purpose and to con- <br /> tribute the funds received by the City as indemnity for the loss <br /> of said structure towards the fund for reconstruction and re- <br /> storation thereof; and, <br /> ,.,�.�,.� <br /> �� ,�,.,.., �_. <br />
