7. MATTERS OF COUNCIL INTEREST
This item limited to fifteen minutes.
Announcements by Council Members
A. Vice Mayor Howard invited everyone to join with hundreds of volunteers in the Annual
Spring Clean-up, Saturday, April 27, 1996. She advised there are many businesses in the
community who will be offering food and other products so that all the volunteers can
have a wonderful, full day cleaning the waterways, cleaning graffiti, planting trees and
really making a difference in the community. Vice Mayor Howard advised that there will
be 100 volunteers from the Audubon Society. The Clean-Up begins with a free breakfast
at 8:30 a.m., 1400 Broadway, the Public Works Services Center.
B. Vice Mayor Howard said that the Aqua Terra Citizens Advisory Subcommittee had been
working with the County and several other agencies to clean up Redwood City waterways,
and to date over 20 abandoned boats had been pulled out of those waterways. Vice Mayor
Howard said it had been a truly voluntary effort, and thanked Pete and Ginny Hughes,
Ralph Nobles, Guy Smith of the Port Commission and Francois Sorba from the City
Attorney's office. Vice Mayor Howard described the ordinances needed to keep the
waterways clean, and advised that Mr. Sorba was working a clear, simple and enforceable
ordinance that could be used in Redwood City.
C. Councilman Ruskin provided an update on the work of the Council Streets Committee,
and the Sidewalks Subcommittee dealing with the repair of the Broadway sidewalks.
Councilman Ruskin said the Committee met with staff and the architect who was then
charged with bringing three options back to the Committee. Those options will be taken
not only to the Council but to the public. A public meeting is scheduled for April 26, 1996
at 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. probably at the Court House Coffee Shop. After that meeting final
modifications will be made and the project will be brought back to the full Council.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8. STAFF REPORTS
A. Comprehensive Street Tree Maintenance Project 1995-1996 Request for Change Order.
(304)
REPORT: Public Works Superintendent, April 8, 1996
Public Works Superintendent Mann presented the staff report and said that storm
related overtime and follow-up response work had expended the annual maintenance
contract faster than normal and the contract balance would not provide for a contract crew
to perform block pruning and scheduled maintenance work during July and August.
MINUTE BOOK NO. 54
Page No. 176 Regular Meeting Minutes
April 8, 1996
Page 8
