7.1.B. - Page 1
REPORT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager
July 27, 2015
SUBJECT
Civic Cultural Commission's Fiscal Year 2015 -2016 Funding Recommendations for Large
Grants
RECOMMENDATION
Approve, by motion, Civic Cultural Commission's Proposed Funding Agreements for
Large Grants for FY 2015 -2016.
BACKGROUND
The City Civic Cultural Commission (CCC), on behalf of the City Council, is responsible
for supporting and enhancing cultural life in Redwood City. The CCC accomplishes this
goal by issuing grants to community non - profit organizations that support art and cultural
activities through criteria developed by the Commission. The CCC receives funding
from the City Council to issue these grants. For Fiscal Year 2015 -2016, a total of
$58,896 is available for large grants (i.e. grants over $1,000), small grants (under
$1,000), public art grants, and commission sponsored events. In March 2005, the CCC
adopted a Strategic Plan which identified the following priority areas to be financially
supported:
• development of Downtown as the City's cultural center;
• arts programs at both the elementary and secondary school levels;
• community building events that celebrate the diversity of our community and
support local arts organizations;
• programs that focus on a senior audience;
• increased investment in public art;
• alternative funding sources for the arts
ANALYSIS
On June 4 2015, the Civic Cultural Commission met to consider large grant funding
recommendations for Fiscal Year 2015 -2016. The Commission discussed the grant
applications and allocated $41,000 of its total budget for large grants. In sum, eighteen
local non - profit cultural and arts organizations submitted large grant requests totaling
$69,850.
