Compare with similar properties. <br /> In its original condition, the Fox Theatre (first built as the Sequoia Theatre in 1928), was one of the area's finest atmospheric <br /> movie palaces. An atmospheric movie palace had a romantic decorative theme, in this case a Spanish Colonial interior, which <br /> enhanced the movie patron's sense of escape. This Spanish interior was almost completely remodeled in 1950, when a portion <br /> of the original plaster ceiling collapsed. (Portions of the original Spanish village decoration are still visible behind the stage.) <br /> The new 1950 interior had a Streamlined Moderne character. The exterior is a stylized Gothic design, with traces of Spanish <br /> Colonial Revival ornamentation and classical symmetry added to it. The San Francisco architectural firm, Reid and Reid, <br /> designed the Sequoia Theatre for Ellis John Arkush, who moved to San Francisco from Chicago in 1912 to work as a <br /> civil engineer on the construction of the Panama - Pacific Exposition. Reid and Reid had established a reputation doing theatres, <br /> having just completed for Arkush Palo Alto's atmospheric New Varsity in 1927. Appearing well maintained, the main facade <br /> retains a great deal of grandeur and historical interest, anchoring a central section of the downtown business district. <br /> 20.
