Councilman Leipzig said all the Council had to do was establish this project as a priority
to build it by the Fall of 1997. "That's the complaint we hear from citizens..... 'Why can't
govermnent move faster?' What takes three and four years to get a City Hall built? What
takes two or three years to get a fire station built? We can do it. We just have to put our
minds to it"
City Manager Everett said the public sector moved more slowly than the private sector
because neighbors and concerned interests were asked to be involved in the process. He
said he hoped everyone would be more satisfied with the project by having input into it at
all stages.
In response to Council questions, Mayor Hartnett said that the operational costs of the
new fire station will probably be in excess of $300,000 more per year more than what the
City currently pays to South County and the money will not magically appear. Mayor
Hartnett said "realistically we can find the money during our budget process such that we
will have it available when the station is built." He said the Council may have to defer
other projects but that should be addressed during the budget process.
MIS: RUSKIN/LA BERGE TO DIRECT STAFF TO BRING A BUDGET THAT WILL
ALLOW FOR COMPLETION OF A FULLY OPERA nONAL FIRE STA nON IN REDWOOD
SHORES TO BE COMPLETED AROUND THE FIRST OF THE YEAR, 1998, AND A
BUDGET TO INCLUDE THE OPERATIONAL FUNDS THEREAFTER AT THE NINETEEN
PERSONNEL STAFFING LEVEL.
CARRIED BY UNANIMOUS ROLL CALL VOTE.
MINUTE ORDER NO. 96-082
MIS: BUCHAN/ /THAT WE RECONCILE THE DISCREPANCIES
BETWEEN THE NUMBERS AND MOVE FORWARD WITH SOME SORT OF
TEMPORARY FIRE STATION FACILITY IN REDWOOD SHORES.
Motion died due to lack of a second.
MINUTE ORDER NO. 96-083
Mayor Hartnett said "There has been brought to us tonight...for the first time, the issue
of the possible disruption in service due to the construction on Holly Street. Certainly
there are some issues raised by that, that mayor may not have to be dealt with by a
temporary fire station." Mayor Hartnett said it was premature to make that decision one
way or other. Mayor Hartnett expressed disappointment that the Council had not been
advised of the possible construction on Holly before the Council meeting, so that they
could have factored that into the other information at hand. Mayor Hartnett said this
matter needed further discussion and the Council needed more information. He asked
that a full information packet on this issue be brought back directly to the full Council at a
future Council meeting as soon as possible.
MINUTE BOOK NO. 54
Page No. 194 Regular Meeting Minutes
April 15, 1996
Page 12
