He stated the number one priority of the Committee is to complete the repair
the Broadway sidewalks. Councilman Ruskin discussed the five options available for the
sidewalks on Broadway. The Committee eliminated options #2 and #3 because of soil
conditions the remaining options are #1, #4a and #4b.
Terry Bottomley, Landscape Architect, Friedman, Tung and Bottomley provided a
sidewalk slide presentation and discussed alternative materials, design options, character
of downtown, the importance of unifying the downtown area and looking at the long term
view.
Councilman Ruskin stated that the Committee recommended option #4a which provides
for all new brick shaped pavers for the entire length of the street and includes replacing the
interlocking pavers already in place in order to have a unified look. Councilman Ruskin
stated that he preferred keeping the interlocking pavers already in place and completing the
process with better interlocking pavers because this would be a cost saving.
Councilmembers discussed sidewalk costs, materials, colors, designs and the importance
of considering the needs of the downtown merchants.
Councilman Ruskin advised that the Architectural Committee was also involved in the
process.
John Holt, Iris Street, appreciated the input of the Committee, does not want option #4a
and prefers more planters.
MINUTE BOOK NO. 54
Page No. 216 Adlorned Regular Meeting
May 6,1996
Page 5
