Councilwoman La Berge said she recalled that the Council did make an overture to
Shelter Network to help Redwood City and said she felt a certain commitment to help
them with their funding. However, with such finite resources, she believed it would
not be wise to make commitments for on-going funding, and funding one year at a
time was a more prudent course.
Councilwoman Buchan said she also was on the Council when Shelter Network was
asked to operate Family Shelter and it was painful to have to limit financial support
and see the CDBG pie shrink every year. Councilwoman Buchan also expressed
concerns regarding on-going funding, and said subsequent Councils are not bound by
past Council recommendations when circumstances change. Councilwoman Buchan
said the HHCC recommendations should be approved and the Council should continue
discussions on how to find the extra funding to meet Shelter Network's needs.
a. Councilman Claire reported that a fire broke out in his garage early Sunday morning, and
passersby and neighbors called the fire department. Fire personnel and equipment arrived
in minutes and quickly extinguished the flames. Councilman Claire was effusive in his
praise for the firefighters who woke his family, escorted them out, and fought the fire with
such great professionalism. He said he, his wife and two of his grandchildren who were in
the house at the time were extremely grateful, and he thanked the firefighters for all they
did for his family.
MINUTE BOOK NO. 54
Page No. 232 Regular Meeting Minutes
May 13, 1996
Page 9
