She encouraged City employees out and <br /> about in the City to encourage people with outstanding achievements in any of the many <br /> '--' categories to submit an application to the awards program. <br /> Vice Mayor Howard reminded her colleagues that Redwood City 2000 needed the name <br /> of the Council Member or hislher representative to the Action Team. STAFF REPORTS <br /> A. Council Streets Committee Recommendations for Design concepts for the Reconstruction <br /> of Sidewalks on Broadway. Council will discuss and take action on this item which was <br /> continued from May 6,1996. (209) <br /> REPORT: Council Streets Committee, May 6,1996 <br /> '----' <br /> Councilman Ruskin referred everyone to the subject report and the list of options and <br /> their pros and cons. Option I, Replace 28 of the existing planter boxes with new planters <br /> and save all the trees; Option 2, Remove all 45 planter boxes and replace with ground level <br /> planting of all new trees; and Option 3, Replace about half of the planter boxes and <br /> remove half the trees in planter boxes and replant new trees at ground level with eventual <br /> goal of removing all the planter boxes in a gradual manner. <br /> Councilman Ruskin said "the choice is clearly between keeping the old growth trees or <br /> not." Councilman Ruskin said that due to the choice of interlocking sidewalk pavers made <br /> last week any "damage that.... tree roots will do to the sidewalks will be very minimal, and <br /> if it does occur will be easily fixed." He said "the question is, how important are these old <br /> beautiful trees?" Councilman Ruskin added that the money required to keep replacing <br /> planters could be used for ground level trees and the surplus for new street furniture. <br /> Councilman Ruskin said the "official recommendation of the Committee is to move <br /> toward long term replacement of the trees, but to do it gradually."
