I . I . -
5. BOARDS, COMMISSION AND COMMITTEE REPORTS
- A. Appointments to the Board of Building Review, three four-year terms expiring April 30,
2000. Individual interviews were held May 13, 1996. (209)
Plan Check Engineer Shehabi distributed the written ballots and tabulated the results.
The meeting continued during the vote tabulation.
--------______nn______----------______nnn_______--n___--______n--___---------------------------______nn______--
B. Oral report from Council Streets Committee Chairman Ruskin regarding Broadway
Sidewalk design. (No written report available.) (209)
Councilman Ruskin referred to two diagrams displayed on the wall and said the
Committee was offering the following recommendation: "The blocks already partially
paved with interlocking pavers will be completed with the same interlocking pavers except
that the design will be minimally enhanced. In those blocks without planters a spotted
pattern will be introduced; in those blocks with planters, in addition to the spotted pattern,
light pavers will unify the planter areas. Those blocks currently without interlocking
pavers will be repaved with newer interlocking pavers in a new design complementing the
design on the other blocks. In all blocks there will be a narrow concrete band around the
planters and tree grates and a wider concrete edging along building ITontage."
Terry Bottomley of Freedman, Tung, and Bottomley Architectural Design Company,
~ showed slides of Broadway sidewalks and the possible alternatives based on Council's
direction, including paver design, planter design, use of colors, use of space, borders,
edgings and unifying effects.
Councilwoman Howard asked staff to investigate the use oflights on the planters, similar
to the planters in Sequoia Station and Sequoia Hospital, which minimize the need for
overhead light poles.
MEMO 5/23
Mayor Hartnett called upon anyone in the audience who wished to speak to this issue.
John Holt, 42 Iris Street, urged Council to gradually remove the planters and their trees
and change Broadway to an open, spacious mall.
Don Saye, 2021 Broadway, described the uneven building ITontage on his block and
perhaps other blocks, and expressed his concern about the aesthetics of an uneven, lighter
border in front of those businesses. Mr. Saye expressed his concerns regarding use of
cement on some of the planters, and food spillage on the lighter pavers.
'-- MINUTE BOOK NO. 54
page No. 243
Special Meeting Minutes
May 22. 1996
Page 4
