. . I . -
City Manager Everett thanked the group for being so committed to this issue and so positive
~ in its approach, and offered to work with them to brainstorm, and bring back recommendations
to the Council.
Councilman Ruskin echoed the group's comments and commended them for being so serious
yet positive about code enforcement in Redwood City. He said he was looking forward to
making important, major visible improvements in the code enforcement area and to the City's
image over the next few years.
Councilman Leipzig said he had been working with this group, "they asked me some advice
on how to approach the Council and this was my suggestion to them, to come before you
tonight and stick out the olive branch and say let's work together. I think we need to have the
study session. I think we need to have it quickIy...We need to have a heart to heart talk
amongst ourselves, our staff and our citizens about the perception of Redwood City, the El
Camino Real, the Woodside corridor, what the City is doing for its public rights of way and the
neighborhoods....I sell real estate, and I am with people who are moving in and out of Redwood
City. I hear this every day. There are neighborhoods that are falling apart. We are losing the
battle in some of the neighborhoods with the weed abatement, with abandoned vehicles on
lawns, cars parked for months on end on the street....We have a serious problem that we need to
address immediateIy......This group is very positive and very energetic, and I really hope we
can schedule something within a 30 day period."
-
Mayor Hartnett said he agreed with Councilman Leipzig's comments about the group that just
spoke. He added, however, that the Council's "schedule has been planned for the next 30 days
for quite a long period of time," and the next two meetings, July 15 and July 29 have
significant matters to be considered with substantial public input. Mayor Hartnett said it was
unrealistic to expect a study session in July at this point, but added if it was the wi!! of the
Council, a study session could be scheduled at a later date.
Councilwoman La Berge thanked the group for speaking on an issue that was near and dear to
her heart, and spoke in favor of a brainstorming session among the group and others that would
result in a report to Council to be considered at the study session.
Councilman Claire asked that the study session be scheduled after August 18, 1996 as he
would be unavailable earlier in August.
City Manager Everett advised he would work with the group to establish a good date for the
study session on code enforcement.
MEMO 7/2196
- - - -- -- - -- - -- -- - -- --- --. -- --- --- -- - -- - --. --- --- - -- - -- - __m_- - --. - -- - --- - -- - --on -- - -- - - -- - -- - --- - _m-- --. -- - -- - - - - - - -- - -- - -- -- - -- -- - _m-- m
REGULAR MEETING JULY I, 1996
MINUTES PAGE 6
MINUTE BOOK NO. 54
Page No. 348
