. . , -
recreation facilities." Councilman Ruskin said that to him it was a good deal
for the City. He added that if nothing was built by 1997, "the City would still
get the fees as those 375,000 feet had been built out, and if nothing additional
was built out by 2002, the City would still get the fees as if 525,000 feet had
- been built out."
. "Finally, I believe this project will bring a world class, high tech business to
Redwood Shores and Redwood City. It will bring good jobs, good revenue
that will enable us to provide quality services for Redwood Shores and the
rest of Redwood City whether that is police services, fire services, recreation
services, or services for the elderly. It will bring a prestige headquarters to
Redwood City and a beautiful campus, and I think on balance, it will have a
very positive effect for Redwood City." Councilman Ruskin said in the final
analysis he concluded he "needed to deny the appeal and welcome Electronic
Arts to our community."
Councilwoman Buchan said "first, I appreciate everyone being here and
sticking it out with us. I thank you all. I commend the appellants for their
presentation, and I appreciate it. I hope that you know that your concerns have
been heard and respected even if disagreed with. My two colleagues have
already listed a number of reasons why they are going to support the motion. I
will support the motion as well. I will focus on but one thing, safety. I would
not knowingly make any decision that would endanger the safety of the citizens
of this City, and I trust you know that no one sitting on this dais would do that."
-
Councilman Leipzig said, "I am glad you brought up the Shoreline Drive
extension. Not only will, in my opinion, the traffic be improved from a flow
standpoint, but I think it adds a safety element as well. The more access
emergency vehicles have in and out of Redwood Shores neighborhood, the better,
in my opinion. I think this will go nicely with the South Shores connector road
that we will deal with in another time....The safety issue, I just have to look to the
FAA, I have to look at my own experience ....1 did get into an airplane and go up
and take a flight around. I have to admit I didn't see a problem.... I asked the
pilot if he felt, and he's been flying out of there for ten years, if there were any
problems that he was aware of it, and he had no problems with it......I've got the
FAA report and I got the flight that I took. We were well over 600 to 800 feet
when we were anywhere near the project. I have to rely on those factors. The
biggest issue for me is the traffic, and I have said this before, and we can do some
things regardless of this project. We should do some things immediately to make
sure we improve traffic for all of Redwood Shores. One is the auxiliary lanes.... I
have heard that 2002 we can expect those lanes to be in. I think that's baloney.
I've already had a discussion with State Senator Quentin Kopp about getting
CalTrans to get off their rear end and get this project moving. The funds are
there, and there is no reason these lanes should not be put in immediately. I am
meeting with him in the next week or so up in Sacramento and we are going to
- work on this. We have to rattle the cages of Sacramento sometimes, and
REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING MINUTE BOOK NO. 54 JULY IS, 1996
MINUTES PAGE 24
Page No. 396
