Jim Vandermaas told a wonderful story about Rebecca, a 7-year old girl from Georgia
who had leukemia, and a 32-year old local man named Chris, a stranger to Rebecca, who
had registered with the National Bone Marrow Donor Program. Chris was contacted to
take part in a bone marrow transplant for Rebecca, and the procedure saved her life.
Rebecca and Chris will be honored at a home plate ceremony on September 15, 1996.
Councilman Ruskin said that he and Councilman Leipzig had been in touch with the
Giants and were part of this worthy effort. He described the Donor Program drive as a
unique opportunity to save a life. Councilman Ruskin said he intended to register as a
donor himself, and encouraged everyone to help support this vital program.
MEMO 8/27/96
_____nn_____n----------n---------------------------------------n--------______n______--------------------------______n
2. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS
A Anton Price, 2666 Broadway, addressed the issue o~ the Broadway Sidewalks
Improvement Project and expressed his opposition to the proposed white pavers/bricks
scheduled to be installed, stating spillage would ruin the bricks even if they were sealed.
He said white was not a good choice and the money for an acceptable maintenance program
would disappear after a few years. He expressed support for the petition signed by 79
Broadway merchants.
B. Joe Staudt, 2611 Broadway asked that his name be removed from the aforementioned
petition. Mr. Staudt said he contacted people in Germany who had experience with the
proposed white pavers, and was reassured that with proper sealing the bricks could be
cleaned and maintained adequately.
C. Bob Bryant, 2227 Broadway, expressed his displeasure with the proposed white pavers,
saying they would soon be dirty from coffee spills and cigarettes being put out on the
sidewalk. Mr. Bryant said the 3500 Ibs of steam pressure used to clean the pavers would
soon wash away the sand leaving ruts that would eventually cause someone to trip. Mr.
Bryant said tan or charcoal would be a better choice than white.
D. William T. Abney, 2660 Broadway, expressed his opposition and displeasure with the
proposed white bricks and said logic dictates the color would be a problem in an area with
heavy foot traffic, and steam cleaning them would create erosion leading to more problems.
He urged Council to reconsider and use a tan and textured brick.
E. Don Saye, 2021 Broadway, distributed the petition with 79 (now 78) signatures expressing
opposition to the proposed white pavers. Mr. Saye read and distributed a letter from Paul
Dazey, 2620 Broadway, asking Council to include entryways that will have "trapped
bricks" after the borders are installed. Mr. Saye said the white pavers will not flatter the
facades on Broadway and said the merchants do not want the dirty white bricks.
REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING MINUTK:BOOK"iNO. 54 AUGUST 26, 1996
MINUTES Page No. 439 PAGE 2
