Mayor Hartnett called upon those members of the audience who wished to speak to this
Issue.
The fonowing people spoke in favor of the Committee and staff's recommendations, and
thanked the Council for being responsive to their concerns:
Ben Ploshay, 2 Waterside Circle, Redwood City;
Carl Fischetti, 28 Dockside Circle, Redwood City;
Kathryn Dickson Fontaine, 5 Channel Drive, Redwood City.
Mayor Hartnett advised there had been hardly any feedback ITom the Sandpiper Lagoon
residents until the Chamber's "Taste of the Shores Festival" the end of September where
the fire station and maintenance facility plans were displayed. He said staffs open house
on site was also helpful for the residents to really see the dimensions of the project. Mayor
Hartnett said how important it was for that issue to be brought to the Council's attention
where they could focus on the magnitude of the buildings and impacts on the neighbors.
Council Members discussed ways to improve the inclusion of public input earlier in the
process of City projects and other ways to directly communicate with residents and
neighbors impacted by City projects. Mayor Hartnett said this project opened a new
chapter in direct communications with residents of the Redwood Shores neighborhood that
would further enhance future projects.
Vice Mayor Howard asked staff to include the residents of Redwood Shores in any
decisions regarding the maintenance facility if the current recommendation for locating it
on SBSA property does not work out.
MEMO 10/29/96
Council Members asked staff to schedule one or more Council meetings in the Redwood
Shores Neighborhood as originally discussed at the January 1996 workshop.
MEMO 10/29/96
MIS: LEIPZIGIHOWARD TO ACCEPT THE FACILITIES COMMITTEE AND STAFF'S
RECOMMENDATIONS:
1. Reaffirm the need for the maintenance facility in the Redwood Shores neighborhood;
and
2. Approve a change in siting of elements of the new Fire Station and Maintenance
Facility that win result in a two site project utilizing the existing project delivery
system and current project team/consultants (including pending CMlGC); and
3. Direct staff to proceed with discussions with South Bayside Systems Authority
(SBSA), the best apparent alternate site, to fully explore development of a joint-use
maintenance facility within the SBSA plant property. It is the intent of the City
Council to site the facility at this location.
