And they also value the sense of community <br /> 3 that we have, particularly in Redwood city, the <br /> 4 notion that this is a really good place to raise <br /> 5 your family. <br /> 6 All of those things to me point to housing <br /> 7 as a critical issue for preserving those values. <br /> 8 JoAnn Kemist made the case regarding the need to <br /> 9 attract talented employees, and obviously that is <br /> 10 an interest that cities have in attracting high <br /> 11 quality companies to this area. <br /> 12 Regarding the environment, if we want to <br /> 13 preserve the three-quarters of our land that is <br />( <br /> 14 open space, the way we do that is building within <br /> 15 the urban boundary. And if we want to take <br /> 16 thousands and thousands of tons of air pollution <br /> 17 out of the air, we keep people close to where they <br /> 18 wo r k, where they live. <br /> 19 And, if we want to build communities and if <br /> 20 we want to see our kids be able to stay here, if we <br /> 21 want to not make people drive countless hours away <br /> 22 from their families just to earn a living, then we <br /> 23 need to have housing here. <br /> 24 It's absolutely critical.
