Red Morton Community Park Sports Lighting Initial Study
City of Redwood City 62 June 2015
4.14 PUBLIC SERVICES

4.14.1 Setting

Public services such as police and fire protection, schools, parks, and public facilities, are operated
and maintained by either the City of Redwood City, local school districts, or the County of San
Mateo.

Fire safety and protection is provided by the City of Redwood City Fire Department. There are five
fire stations located in the City. The nearest station to the project site is Station 10, located roughly
0.1 miles west of the site at the corner of Myrtle Street and Jefferson Avenue.

Public safety services are provided by the City of Redwood City Police Department. The Police
Department is located at 1301 Maple Street, roughly two miles north of the site.

Redwood City contains numerous public, charter, and private schools ranging from preschools to
high schools. The majority of preschools are privately owned. Three public school districts serve the
plan area: the Redwood City School District (RCSD), the Belmont-Redwood Shores School District
(BRSD), and the Sequoia Union High School District (SUHSD). The RCSD operates the majority of
elementary schools. The BRSD oversees one existing elementary and one future elementary school.
The SUHSD includes two high schools and two charter schools. The nearest school to the project
site is John Gill Elementary School, located on the west side of Jefferson Avenue between Myrtle
Street and Ave Del Ora, roughly 0.1 miles from the site.

The City of Redwood City’s neighborhood parks system services the active and passive recreational
needs of residents with approximately 226 acres of active developed parkland and approximately 700
acres of designated open space. Approximately 43 acres of the City’s active parkland is associated
with school facilities (including athletic fields and playgrounds). Other public par k and recreational
facilities in the plan area include community centers, trails, and swimming pools, which may be
within City parks. Community parks are typically designed for organized activities; users are
typically both local residents and non-residents. These parks may include sports fields, picnic areas,
BBQ pits, off-street parking, and restrooms. Redwood City has five community parks totaling 94.7
acres. The project site, Red Morton Community Park, is part of the City’s community parks system.

8.A. - Page 79
