Disaster Advisory Committee - report and update on power outage - Mayor Hartnett. <br /> (205) <br /> Tim McCarthy, representing PG&E, and a Redwood City resident, stated that on behalf <br /> of PG&E he wanted to offer their sincerest apologies for the recent power outages suffered <br /> as a result of the unusual and horrific storm that hit the West Coast on December 11, 12 <br /> and 13th. Mr. McCarthy stated PG&E's biggest problems were downed power lines and <br /> damage to a few important towers as a result of in excess of 100 MPH sustained winds, <br /> and up to 130 MPH gusts in some areas. Mr. McCarthy said that after the storm moved <br /> through, 1.6 million customers were affected in various degrees and within 48 hours 1.4 <br /> million customers had power fully restored. Mr. McCarthy advised that their phone <br /> operations were insufficient to handle the number of calls, although there were over 1,000 <br /> incoming lines and 1,000 operators on duty. During the March storms PG&E received <br /> 536,000 calls. During this December storm PG&E received 2 million calls. There phone <br /> system was overwhelmed. <br /> Tim McCarthy described the PUC's investigation and recommendation process and asked <br /> that everyone send their comments to PG&E so they can learn from this experience and <br /> provide even better service if another catastrophe hits. He advised that the results of that <br /> investigation would be made available to all City Councils. Mr. McCarthy gave the City <br /> Clerk PG&E claim forms and asked if the City would please mail the claim forms to <br /> anyone calling and asking for assistance to recover losses.
