PUBLIC COMMENT
A. Nita Spangler, 980 Edgewood Road, Redwood City, told the Council how she had
written the original history of Union Cemetery that qualified it for the National
Register, and added that additional information is still being discovered. Mrs.
Spangler provided a brief history of the Union Cemetery committee and her
disappointment at the direction it chose to pursue. She described the loss of focus and
misunderstanding of historical perspectives held by the Union Cemetery committee
and staff. Mrs. Spangler identified the problems with the proposed action plan for
Union Cemetery soon to be submitted to Council for approval, and she asked Council
to commit to a true cultural and historical resource plan for Union Cemetery that
would preserve it, rather than assume the financial liability that the pending action
plan will require, including dumping gravel in a historical site, installing a very
destructive irrigation system, and assuming the cost of lighting to name just a few.
Mrs. Spangler asked the Council Members to seriously consider whether they wanted
to turn Union Cemetery into just another old cemetery or if they truly wanted a
historically restored site.
MINUTE BOOK NO. 53
Page No. 109
