MATTERS OF COUNCIL INTEREST
A. Councilwoman La Berge reported on the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors'
decision to approve a lease with the San Mateo County Historical Museum Association for
use of the County Court House, the basement and first two floors. Councilwoman La
Berge described the 30 year lease with two automatic renewals, and the plans for the
County courts and offices now located in the Court House. Councilwoman La Berge
advised that the Museum would fund refurbishing and operations, had raised $800,000 and
was actively seeking contributions and grants to raise the necessary funds to complete the
move. Councilwoman La Berge, member of the fund raising committee, described the
benefits of locating this museum, which had 30,000 visitors last year, in downtown
Redwood City, and advised that the Association will ask for financial assistance from the
Redwood City Redevelopment Agency. Councilwoman La Berge added that the
museum's move in early 1997 will be another important addition to the revitalization of
downtown Redwood City.
B. Councilman Sanfilipo advised he would be unable to attend the joint meeting of the City
of Redwood City Council and Belmont Elementary School District Board of Trustees on
Tuesday, March 28, 1995, due to a previous commitment. Councilman Sanfilipo advised
that although he wholeheartedly supported the new school, park and community center to
be approved at the joint meeting, he believed calling an extra Council meeting was not the
appropriate manner in which to consider the approval of such an important project.
Councilman Sanfilipo advised it would have been a better use of staff time and allowed for
more discussion had approval of the agreement been scheduled for a regular Council
meeting and a regular Board meeting, with a symbolic signing taking place at a later time
by those who wished to attend. Councilman Sanfilipo repeated his support for the project
and his displeasure with the extra meeting called for joint approval of the project.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MINUTE BOOK NO. 53 Regular Meeting Minutes
Page No. 120 March 27, 1995
Page 7
