In response to Council questions, Library Director Light described the Homework
Program at the Fair Oaks Community Center two days a week, and announced that
Monday, October 9, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. the Library will be featured live on KPIX,
"why libraries are cool", and the program will be repeated that afternoon.
7) Pride and Beautification Committee, Councilwoman Howard, Chairperson;
REPORT: Pride and Beautification Committee Mission and 1995-1996 Scope of Work
Chairperson Howard introduced members of the Pride and Beautification Committee:
Jeanne Roehm, G.J. Scove, Merrily Robinson, Nat Mangini, Bonnie Miller, and Don
Saye.
G. J. Scove described the Committee as a volunteer membership comprised of concerned
citizens, representatives from Redwood City schools, business people, CIVIC
organizations and City staff, including Carolyn McLaurin from the City Manager's staff
who keeps us organized. The Committee focuses on the physical environment, and
welcomes everyone to bring problems to the attention of the Committee Members and
work with them and City staff to resolve them. Some of the projects undertaken by the
Committee include clean-ups at eastern end of Whipple Avenue, Rolison Road, train
tracks, and the 4th of July parade route, and graffiti clean-up. The Committee stresses
community responsibility, action and results.
Jeanne Roehm discussed the current successful Aqua Terra Project, her hopes for the
eradication of graffiti, and how the Committee is making Redwood City the best place to
live.
Mayor Gasparini told everyone how proud she was of the accomplishments of the Pride
and Beautification Committee and that it was the toughest committee to leave. Mayor
Gasparini stated that personal commitment and pride in the community comes from the
people and not from government regulations, and the Committee's actions and
partnerships with the police and code enforcement officials are having positive impacts -
graffiti and shopping cart abuses are decreasing.
Councilwoman La Berge asked that the Committee be particularly concerned with and
protective of environmental issues.
Chairperson Howard invited everyone to attend the Committee's meetings at 7:30 a.m.
the first Wednesday of every month. Chairperson Howard asked if the Committee could
be formally recognized and promoted into the City roster. Council Members discussed
the advantages and disadvantages of having such a loosely organized Committee,
acknowledged how successful it had been in its present organization, and agreed that the
Committee should be recognized in some way.
[NUTE BOOK NO. 53
I.ge No. 358 Adj.
