Councilwoman Buchan said she would never forget their support and would treasure it
always.
D. Councilman Claire stated he was a family man who took great pride in his family. First,
he mentioned that he was so proud of his oldest son who followed in his footsteps as an
accountant and teacher. and who was his colleague in the San Mateo Community College
District. He introduced his son, Mike Claire and his wife Patti, and their daughters Megan
and Kelly. Councilman Claire, with tongue in cheek, thanked his youngest son for
working so hard on his campaign, and more seriously for his shared interests and for being
such a great son, Ken. Next, Councilman Claire thanked his daughter Laurie for all her
hard work on his campaign and for being the greatest daughter in the world, and
introduced her two sons, his grandsons, Alejandro and Dominic Bueno. Councilman
Claire spent a great deal of time thanking Pete Hughes for his encouragement and advice,
Jack Anthony, Virginia Ball, Lew Miller, and former Mayors Bob Bury, Jack Greenalch,
and Brent Britschgi, for their guidance and moral leadership throughout the years.
Councilman Claire said he hoped to embody the best parts of all those individuals to better
serve his community. He thanked all of the City employees who urged him to run and
who helped him in the campaign and to see issues in a different light, stating they were a
great group of people. Councilman Claire said "last but not least I want to thank the
person who probably worried more about this campaign, and did more shoving and
pushing....a woman I have been married to now for thirty-five years (2 days from now) my
darling wife, Pat." Changing gears, Councilman Claire stated that in the last two years of
his last Council tenure he had allowed some exigent circumstances to keep him from being
as polite as he should have been, and he summed up by adding "I am going to promise you
that this next four years I am going to work my tail off for this City, and that is my
promise to all of you out there. Thank you again for electing me."
E. Vice Mayor Howard thanked the members of the City Council for electing her Vice
Mayor. She stated "1995 has been a very enriching year for me filled with new
challenges, hard work and the making of new friendships." Vice Mayor Howard
acknowledged the members of City staff, the employees who work so hard for the City,
thanking them for their inspirational dedication. She also thanked Lydia Aguilar, who was
in the audience who she considers "a sister and good friend to me, who works with us, and
without her help I would not have been able to balance both the City and the office, a busy
family practice. Thank you Lydia." Vice Mayor Howard added "I would like to thank my
husband, Steve Howard, standing in the back....I'd like to thank him for his continued
support, his good nature, his love of this City, his sense of humor, and his cooperative
spirit, which has given me the tremendous opportunity to serve you, and still continues to
make our relationship more solid than ever. Thank you very much Steve." Vice Mayor
Howard described a political discussion her family had with her father-in-law Bernard
Howard, where he commented "government does nothing for responsible people but annoy
them." She said over the years she had come to understand his cynicism but added that "it
will be my goal to help our local government distinguish itself from the apparent
confusion that we see everyday at the state and national levels. If the political process is to
be workable, it begins at the local level. Weare not impeded by political parties or special '--
Adjourned Regular Meeting Minutes
1INUTE BOOK NO. 53 November 17,1995
?age No. 436 Page 11
