popularity contest, that he was elected because many people placed confidence in him to
join with the other Council Melllbers to guide the community in the years ahead. He said
it was a great responsibility and a great honor, and thanked everyone for placing their
confidence in him. Councilman Ruskin thanked the Council Members who had just
stepped down for their dedication and service to the City. He also thanked all the
candidates who ran for the office of Council Member and participated in the campaign
helping to formulate the issues, and who contributed to an understanding "of what it takes
to make Redwood City as good a place as it can be." Councilman Ruskin stated he owed
much to the many people who helped his campaign, but he realized that he will serve all
the people of Redwood City, and he would do the best job he could do, not only for those
who voted for him, but for everybody in the City, including those who did not vote. He
stated that "participation in the political process has waned in the last few years and it is
my hope that by the quality of the process here on the City Council, the quality of
government that we are able to bring to the City, that we can induce more people to come
out and vote and join the political process." Councilman Ruskin stated that he wanted to
thank the one person without whose help and support and encouragement he could never
have been elected to Council, the best wife and life partner any man could have, his wife
Cheryl. Councilman Ruskin stated that he had intended to go through the issues facing
Redwood City but would do that at another time. He said times were changing, it was a
time of real transition economically and socially, and he believed that if the Council
proceeded with "good faith and hard work that we can make the most of those times and
opportunities.....We need to make the most of the economic opportunities that face us
while we keep the best of Redwood City from the past: the fine neighborhoods that we
have, the people-friendly feel of the City." Councilman Ruskin stated that
communications had been a problem between the Council and the people in the past, and
he announced that he would have "open hours every week to meet with people and be in
the same place at the same time one evening a week for two hours. To be available to talk
with people in the community." Councilman Ruskin stated that he thought it was essential
to increase the amount of communications between the people in government and residents
of the City. He again thanked everyone and added that all the people in the room really
cared about the City or they wouldn't be there, and pledged that he would work as hard as
he could everyday to make Redwood City as good a place to live, to raise families, to do
business, and to visit as he possibly could. He thanked everyone for the honor they had
bestowed upon him.
C. Councilwoman Buchan said that first and foremost she wished to thank her family for
their love and support, in person, by phone and by the Internet. She gave particular thanks
to her mother who endured it all and got everyone through the campaign with lots of love
and lots of chocolate chip cookies. Councilwoman Buchan thanked the special people on
her campaign committee who did such a great job, Erin Callaghan, Bonnie Miller, Cliff
Keely, Rene White, Don Saye and Dick Claire. She added that above all, she wished to
sincerely thank the people of Redwood City who had given her the great privilege of
serving another term, and the great privilege of being part of the extended City family.
Adjourned Regular Meeting Minutes MINUTE BOOK NO. 53
Page No. 435
November 17,1995 Page 10
.----...
