<br />much money on monuments when there were so many other needs such as <br />child care, education, or housing that were much more important. <br />Pam Hitchcock, Redwood Avenue, Redwood City, stated she was against the <br /> comprehensive nature of the proposals especially the monuments; however, <br /> opening up Hamilton with a crosswalk from Sequoia Station to the <br /> downtown might be OK. <br />Jeff Filippi, Middlefield Road, Redwood City, asked Council to approve the <br />arch signs, "Cl imate Best by Government Test", as they will restore a <br />sense of community to Redwood City and provide a link between the <br />past and the future. Mr. Filippi distributed materials in support of <br />the proposed archway signs. <br />Don Saye, Broadway merchant, spoke in support of these proposals. <br />Mayor Buchan asked if anyone else wished to speak to this issue. No one <br />came forward. <br />M/S: STEINFELD/LA BERGE TO EXTEND THE MEETING TO 11:15 P.M. <br />CARRIED BY UNANIMOUS VOICE VOTE. <br /> MINUTE ORDER NO. 93-237 <br />Councilwoman Steinfeld spoke in opposition to the two programs, except for <br />possibly two outside signs, on the grounds that the money was needed for <br />necessary projects, including covering budget deficits, the new City Hall, <br />affordable housing and paying back the loan from the City to the <br />Redevelopment Agency to cover removal of toxics in the parking structure. <br />Councilwoman Steinfeld advised she was uncomfortable with expenditures <br />on these projects during a recession. <br />Councilmembers expressed their likes and dislikes and the positives and <br />negatives regarding the various components of the two programs. <br />In response to Council questions, Director Patterson described plans for <br />Winslow, including the proposal to do the striping and bicycle lanes first, <br />and deal with the median at a later date.
