B. Councilman Sanfilipo described the community meeting he and Supervisor
Barrales attended with the Middlefield Ro~d business people and residents
to discuss solutions to long~standing problems. Councilman Sanfilipo
advised the Redwood City Police and San Mateo County Sheriff's department
would take part in the next meeting scheduled for February 3rd.
C. Mayor Buchan invited her colleagues to attend the Council of Cities meeting
on January 28th in Redwood City which will feature local school board
members.
Mayor Buchan announced that the new Sequoia Station See's Candy store will
have their ribbon cutting this Thursday, January 13th.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8. STAFF REPORTS
A. Council to consider designation of the official newspaper of Redwood City
(702-20)
REPORT: City Clerk, December 13, 1993.
City Clerk Jorgenson presented the staff report which recommended the
designation of the Redwood City Tribune as the official newspaper based on
the Tribune's lowest bid. Ms. Jorgenson acknowledged the excellent service
provided by the Redwood City Almanac as the City's official newspaper for
the last ten years, but quoted savings figures that would accrue to the City
based on the Tribune's lower bid. Ms. Jorgenson advised that questions had
been raised as to the adjudication of the Tribune and explained that the
Superior Court of San Mateo County had declared the Tribune a newspaper of
general circulation and only the Court could make such a determination. The
Charter's wording of "two lowest bidders" and the City Attorney's opinion
were noted.
The following people addressed the Council:
Joe Steinfeld, Main Street merchant, acknowledged that small businesses were
having tough times, but the policy of choosing the lowest responsible
bidder should be applied consistently throughout the City.
Leonard Sbrocco, Editor of the Redwood City Tribune, urged Council to
designate the Tribune as its official newspaper to take advantage of the
cost savings.
Jeff Filippi, 627 Middlefield Road, spoke on behalf of the Redwood City
Almanac and its excellent record, stating that quality is as important as
cost. Mr. Filippi pointed out that the Almanac was delivered and the Tribune
was not, and that readership was more important than number of newspapers.
Regular Meeting Minutes
January 10, 1994 MINUTE BOOK NO. 52
Page 8 Page No. 89
--
