B. Mike Kastrop, 28 Meadow Lane, Redwood City, described the Council's lack of action on the
problem of random gunfire in the southeastern part of Redwood City; referred to the petition signed
by 500 residents of southeastern Redwood City; and asked Council to vote tonight on the Urban
Gunfire Location system.
C. Council Members, Mr. Daum and Mr. Kastrop engaged in an exchange of dialogue regarding the
Council's efforts and the neighborhood's efforts to create solutions to the long term and serious
problem of random gunfire in southeastern Redwood City. Almost everyone agreed that
misinformation and misconceptions regarding this issue existed, and that alternative funding and
actions should be considered.
D. Juan Vilorio, 314 King Street, urged Council to approve funding for the Urban Gunfire Location
System, and let technology take its course.
Vice Mayor Claire stated that East Palo Alto had been successful in dramatically reducing crime in
that city by a large police presence; and, limited resources force the Council to choose between a
successful approach of more police on the streets, or a very expensive untested technology.
Mayor Buchan described how the City and neighborhood task forces have created drug-free zones
around Fair Oaks School, Hoover School and Taft School; and referred to the increased police
involvement in southeastern Redwood City that had resulted in decreased criminal activity in the
area.
2.
