Leo Crawford, Chairman of the American Legion Citizen of the Year Award Committee <br /> described the annual dinner and award and introduced this year's recipient and outstanding <br /> citizen Frank Guida. Mr. Guida gave a short speech and all in attendance applauded his <br /> accomplishments heartily. <br /> 5. GENERAL <br /> A. CANADA COLLEGE <br /> 1) Canada College's 25th Anniversary <br /> Dr. Douglas Kechter, President of Canada College, invited the Council to share in the <br /> celebration of Canada's 25th anniversary at the April 29, 1994, Convocation on the College <br /> campus. Canada College is one of three colleges in the San Mateo County Community College <br /> District that is recognized as one of the best in the state of California. Over the last twenty-five <br /> years Canada College has awarded 8,200 associate degrees and 3,031 program certificates. Dr. <br /> Kechter described his goals for partnerships with cities, high schools and other community <br /> entities to improve access to higher education for more students every year. <br /> 2) Community Economic Development Program <br /> Dr. Kechter introduced Ms. Kathy Williams, the College's new consultant for Economic <br /> Development and Grant Writing, and recognized Councilman Greenalch, a professor at <br /> Canada College, who has been named Canada College Coordinator of Community Economic <br /> Development and Redevelopment. Dr. Kechter discussed his vision for Canada College as a <br /> leader in developing economic strategies to create job skills, retain businesses, attract new <br /> businesses, share resources with the community and become an information center for <br /> businesses, governments, schools and other entrepreneurial entities in the community. Dr. <br /> Kechter described Canada College's future role in the community and in international education. <br /> Dr. Kechter discussed Canada College's commitment to expanding quality education and to <br /> partnerships for community economic development. <br /> B. MID YEAR BUDGET REVIEW <br /> Finance Director Ponty provided background on the economy during previous slowdown <br /> years as well as current budget figures and future economic forecasts. <br /> 1) Fiscal Year 1994-95 revenue estimates; <br /> 2) Recommended budgetary guidelines fiscal year 1994-95; <br /> 3) Recommended uses of one time funds from fiscal year 1993-94 <br /> (Teeter Funds and Motor Vehicle Rebate Funds) <br /> 4) Budget unknowns; <br /> 5) The initial budgetary gap; <br /> 6) Discussion of possible new revenue. <br /> MINUTE BOOK NO. 52 Special Study Session <br /> March 7, 1994 <br /> Page No. 156 Page 2 <br />
