-,
John Holt, 42 Iris Street, Redwood City, stated he had read both reports, and the Council
was wasting its time by attacks from the Steinfelds. He said it is a sad commentary on this
City and urged the Council to censure Councilwoman Steinfeld for her actions.
James Hartnett, 346 Grand, Redwood City, stated he was embarrassed by Councilwoman
Steinfeld's conduct and the continuing disruptions of Council meetings by her husband.
Mr. Hartnett stated it was an offense to the Council and the community, that he hoped the
Council would express its contempt for their behavior expeditiously and then get on with
the business of the City and ignore them. In response to Councilwoman Steinfeld's
questions, Mr. Hartnett stated he chose not to engage in a colloquy with Councilwoman
Steinfeld.
In response to Councilwoman Steinfeld's questions, Councilman Greenalch stated that
there is no intention to deny her right to a defense, but the difficulty of this situation was
the moving in and out of issues she continually raised. Councilman Greenalch
acknowledged the good working relationship they had on committees and on other issues.
Councilman Greenalch responded to Councilwoman Steinfeld's assertions that this Report
based its conclusions on four instances, which was a very narrow focus, stating that it was
indeed her actions that brought about the conclusions of the Subcommittee. Councilman
Greenalch stated that had Councilwoman Steinfeld not responded in the way she did to
Councilman Sanfilipo's accusations there would not have been an investigation.
Councilman Greenalch stated that Councilwoman Steinfeld was in control of this process
from this point forward, she was in control. But she didn't have control over others, and it
was necessary for the seven of them to distance themselves from Mr. Steinfeld. Mr.
Steinfeld does not recognize that you were elected to the Council not him. This is not a
personal attack but an attempt to engage in a healing process.
City Manager Everett described the Report as addressing what is acceptable behavior
based on the individual Council Member's standards.
James Jackson, Counsel to the Subcommittee, stated the conduct called into questions was
identified in the Report's paragraphs 2,3, and 4, and Exhibit F, the letter written to Great
Western. The Subcommittee recommendation is to make Councilwoman Steinfeld aware
of its disapproval of her conduct during the investigation.
Councilwoman Steinfeld stated she was independent of her husband, and he was acting to
protect her as any husband would.
MINUTE BOOK NO. 52
Regular Meeting Minutes Page No. 181
March 21, 1994
Page 10
- -----
