Councilwoman La Berge presented a short history of the San Mateo County Historical
Museum and described how important it is and how very popular it has been in our community
at large over the years. Councilwoman La Berge, member ofthe Task Force seeking a new
location for the Museum, advised that the Museum's lease at the College of San Mateo expires
the end of 1994. Many sites have been suggested and researched, but the site most seriously
considered is the old Courthouse. If the Museum is granted use of the building, which would be
available in 1996, a great deal of money would be needed to retrofit and modernize the old
Courthouse -- somewhere between $2.5 and $10 million depending on many, many factors.
Councilwoman La Berge described the cultural, historical and financial benefits that would
accrue ifthe Museum were to relocate to Redwood City. Councilwoman La Berge advised that
the Board of Supervisors is supporting this effort, and asked that her colleagues on the Council
help forge a partnership between the Historical Association, the County and the City to endorse
this relocation effort. (301-08)
Mayor Buchan thanked Councilwoman La Berge for her involvement in this relocation effort
and advised that it went without saying that her colleagues supported her efforts.
MEMO 3/27/94
9.
