<br /> Legal request for funds, and asked Council to have the Housing and Human Concerns
<br /> Committee do a more comprehensive assessment of La Raza's grant proposal. Mrs. Lopez
<br /> Chavez urged Council to reconsider La Raza's request for a grant.
<br /> Salvador Sandoval, Spring Street, spoke in support of funding for La Raza Centro Legal.
<br /> Mr. Sandoval stated there was a large number of Latinos in this community who have been
<br /> underserved for many years, and he was asking the Council, as a Latino leader, to please
<br /> give funding for La Raza serious attention because they are organizing. elections are
<br /> coming up, and we have 3,000 registered voters, Latinos, who will make a difference in the
<br /> next election.
<br /> Joe Steinfeld, Main Street, spoke in support of funding for La Raza Centro Legal and
<br /> suggested 1 % be taken away from other grantees and given to La Raza.
<br /> Lois Almen Everett, Executive Director of the Human Investment Project, thanked
<br /> Council for its support over the years and described the three homes the Project is operating
<br /> in Redwood City. (HIP requested $35,000, HHCC recommended $22,000.)
<br /> Paul Blackburn, Executive Director of Second Harvest Food Bank, thanked the Council
<br /> for its support over the years and described Operation Brown Bag. (Second Harvest Food
<br /> Bank requested $10,000, HHCC recommended $8,000.)
<br /> Lynn Borozon and Nancy Walker from Peninsula Volunteers, Inc. and Rosener House
<br /> thanked the Council for its support over the years and described Rosener House's services
<br /> for senior citizens from Redwood City and the Meals on Wheels program. (Peninsula
<br /> Volunteers requested $20,000, HHCC recommended $12,500.)
<br /> Pietie Vreman, Catholic Charities Adult Day Support Center, thanked the Council and
<br /> described the services provided. (Catholic Charities requested $15,000, HHCC
<br /> recommended $8,000.)
<br /> Colette Hoffman, Executive Director of Ellipse, Peninsula AIDS Services, thanked the
<br /> Council for its support. (Ellipse requested $32,000, HHCC recommended $23,350.)
<br /> Chris Sutherland, Executive Director of Shelter Network which operates four facilities in
<br /> San Mateo County, including Redwood Family House in Redwood City, advised Council
<br /> that Shelter Network had taken over operation of Redwood House at the request of the
<br /> Council in 1990, with the assurances that the "City would thereafter continue to provide
<br /> matching funds for program operations not funded by HUD." (Quote from Ms. Sutherland's
<br /> letter to Housing Coordinator Jones-Thomas, May 2, 1994 (on file in the City Clerk
<br /> Department.) Director Sutherland advised that Shelter Network had requested $80,000 (FY
<br /> 1993/94 the Council approved $75,000), but HHCC had only recommended $50,000. In
