John Mooney, candidate for Council, spoke to the issue of affordable housing in <br /> Redwood City and recommended a task force of Councilmembers, representatives from <br /> the school district) trade unions and developers to come up with ideas for affordable <br /> housing such as a lower property tax rate for the 1 st year or lower mortgage rate. <br /> Councilmembers thanked Mr. Mooney and described the City's commitment to affordable <br /> housing, the Wyndham Place development, the affordable units added to the Lido <br /> Development and the MainlMiddlefield development. The Council advised there is <br /> already such a task force in place - the City's Housing and Human Concerns committee - <br /> and described the City's 1 st time homebuyer programs. <br /> C. Joe Steinfeld, candidate for Council, described his presentation on saving downtown <br /> trees to the Pride and Beautification Committee, commented on the discussion at the <br /> August 29 Council meeting regarding the pros and cons of Redevelopment status, and <br /> reiterated his objections to the $120,000 per unit subsidy at Wyndham Place. <br /> D. John Mooney, candidate for Council, stated that in light of the budget situation and the <br /> police budget so thin, Council should review its priorities and not treat all priorities <br /> equally. Mr. Mooney recommended that the Council first fund fire, police) sewer, water <br /> and street programs before considering the needs of the non-profit organizations listed on <br /> the Consent Calendar. <br /> Councilwoman La Berge, candidate for Council, described the open and public budget <br /> and priority setting process and advised that the non-profit organizations receiving <br /> financial assistance provide a much needed service to youth and others in the City and they <br /> deliver their vital services better than any other agency one could find. <br /> -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- <br /> 2.
