Safety Data Sheet
Material Name: Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate
* * * Section 9 -Physical & Chemical Properties
Physical Properties: Additional Information
ID: Cl-121A
* * *
The data prov id ed in this section are to be used for product safety handling purposes. Please refer to Product Data Sheets, Certificates of
Confonniry or Certi ficates of Analysis for chemical and physical data fo r determinations of quality and for formulation purposes.
Appearance: Blue crystals or powder Odor: Odorless
P b ys ical State: Solid pR: 3.7-4.2(10%soln.)
Vapor Pressure: 20 torr at 22.5 deg C Vapor Density: 8.6
Boiling Point: 560 deg C (I 040 deg F) [decomposes) Freezing/Melting Point: 150 deg C (302 deg F)
Solubility (H20): 31.6 gil 00 cc (@ 0 deg C) Specific Gravi ty: 2.28 @ 15.6 deg C (11 20 = 1)
Softening Point: Not available Particle S ize: Various
Molecular Weight: 249.68 B ulk Density: Not available
Flash Point: Not flammable Chemical Formula : CuS04*5Il20
Upper F lammable Limit (UEL): Not applicable
Auto Ignition: Not applicab le
Rate of Burning: Not appl icable
Lower F lammable Limit (LEL): Not appl icable
Flammability C lassification: Not applicable
* * * Section 10 -Chemical Stability & Reactivity Information * * *
Chemical Stability
Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate is hy groscopic, but stable when kept dry, under nonnal temperature and pressures.
C hemical Stability: Conditions to Avoid
A void high temperatures, e.;xposure to ai r and incompatible materials.
Incompatibility
Copper Sulfate causes hydroxylamine to ignite and th e hydrated salt is vigorously reduced. Solutions of sodium hypobromite are
decomposed by powerful catalytic action of cupri c ions, even as impurities .. Copper salts, in c luding Copper Su i fate m ay react to form
exp losive acetylides when in contact with acety lene or njtromethane. Contact with reducing agents, can cause a vigorous reaction,
especially in solu tion. Thi s product can corrode aluminum, steel and iron. Copper Sulfate Pentahydrate is inco mpatible w ith
magnesium, strong bases, alkalines, phosphates, acety lene, hydrazi n e, and z ircon ium.
Hazardous Decomposition
Sulfur oxides and Copper oxides.
Hazardous Polymerization Will not occur.
*** Section 11 -Toxicological Information * * *
Acute and Chronic Toxicity
A: General Product lnfo•·mation
Acute toxicity is largely due to the con·osive (ac idic) prope11ies of this material. I !armful o r fatal if swall owed. Product is an eye and
skin irritant, and may cause burns. Product is a respiratory tract irritant, and inhalation may cause nose irritation, so re throat,
coughing, and chest tightness and possibly, ulceration and perforation of th e nasal septum.
Chronic: Long term ski n overell:pos ure to this product may lead to dermatitis a nd eczema. Prolonged or repeated eye contact may
cause conjunctivitis and possibly corneal abnormalities.
