<br /> Vice Mayor Hartnett said it was a bitter sweet time for him: bitter because he would not <br /> be able to work with Councilmembers Claire and Greenalch. Vice Mayor Hartnett said he <br /> would miss their humor and intelligence, and stated he would try to live up to the <br /> principles they maintained. Vice Mayor Hartnett thanked his family, his wife and two <br /> sons, for their support; and thanked the other candidates for making the campaign so <br /> competitive. Vice Mayor Hartnett stated he is recommitting himself to those policy issues <br /> he promised during the campaign, and would take on a leadership role in public safety, <br /> improve the business environment to preserve the tax base, and work to ensure quality <br /> education, a community asset. Vice Mayor Hartnett added that the sweet part of being <br /> elected to the Redwood City Council was joining such a quality Council and he is looking <br /> forward to facing the challenges ahead with his colleagues. <br /> Councilwoman La Berge expressed her delight in being reelected and stated there is no <br /> other job in the world she would rather have than serving as a Redwood City <br /> Councilwoman: Councilwoman La Berge stated that being a public servant is the highest <br /> calling. She stated that there is nothing more exciting, more noble and often nothing more <br /> stressful than being a Council Member, and she was proud of the accomplishments of the <br /> Councils on which she has served. Councilwoman La Berge expressed her love for the <br /> people of Redwood City, the diversity of its people, and how proud she was to have served <br /> with Council Members Jack Greenalch, Dick Claire, Jack Murray, Brent Britschgi and Bill <br /> Rhodes and others. Councilwoman La Berge thanked all the voters of Redwood City, her <br /> Council colleagues, City staff, her husband, Warren Dale, her campaign committee, and <br /> stated she was looking forward to the future and the potential of Redwood City. <br /> Councilwoman Howard introduced her husband Dr. Steven Howard, apologized for <br /> embarrassing him, and thanked him for his support and encouragement throughout the <br /> campaign stating she could not have done it without him. <br /> Mayor Gasparini thanked her colleagues for the opportunity to serve as Mayor of <br /> Redwood City for the next year, and stated she embarked upon the challenge with <br /> enthusiasm and a positive outlook. Mayor Gasparini suggested everyone read Robert <br /> Fulghum's Eve()'1:hin¡: I Need to Know. I Learned in Kinder¡:arten, in which he talks about <br /> "a time where we said please and thank you, a time where we learned how to share, where <br /> we learned to cooperate, and a time when our teachers taught us to move forward <br /> positively." Mayor Gasparini stated she would bring those values back to the Council, and <br /> reminded everyone that they were all there because of support from families, friends and <br /> co-workers; that being positive and working together, and staying at the table until the best <br /> solutions were reached for the people of Redwood City would be her goal.
