6. MATTERS OF COUNCIL INTEREST
A. Request from the Fox Theatre Task Force for approval of recommendations
(1307 -01)
Mayor La Berge presented a brief history of the recommendations of the Fox
Theatre Task Force and the discussion during the Public Hearing held on
March 2, 1992 and asked for Council approval of those recommendations:
1. Peninsula Center Stage, working in conjunction with the Historical
Resources Advisory Committee, will start the process to determine if the Fox
Theatre can be designated a state and/or federal historic Theatre. Fees for
this, not to exceed $2,000, will be paid by the City.
2. The City will provide the Civic Cultural Commission with $15,000 to
support three community cultural events at the Fox to be presented within a
12 month period.
3. Peninsula Center Stage will produce three productions at the Fox within
a twelve month period with a grant from the City of $30,000.
4. A clear written agreement between Peninsula Center Stage and the City
outlining in full the responsibilities of each will be developed.
5. This task force will provide an evaluation of the above plan at the end
of twelve months.
6. The marquee will be repaired with the City Facade Improvement Program
providing one half of the cost and the Downtown Association will solicit
donations for the other half.
7. Peninsula Center Stage will place displays in all ten of the front
windows.
8. A study session will be held with the City Council of Redwood City and
the Civic Cultural Commission to consider the above and to facilitate
community involvement.
As a point of clarification, Councilman Greenalch advised that the Peninsula
Center Stage had proposed the following schedule for the Fox: 13 weeks for
production; 39 performances; 28 weeks rehearsals; and 9 weeks for outside
groups; and Michael Spicer, artistic director of the Peninsula Center Stage
advised they were proposing between 35 and 39 performances, depending on how
well they do.
Councilman Greenalch referred to the letter by Civic Cultural Commissioner
Fischer to the Council emphasizing need for historical preservation of the
Fox theatre, access to groups, and specific plan for the next 12 months.
Regular Meeting Agenda
March 16, 1992 MINUTE BOOK NO. 51
Page 4 Page No. 23
i '-'*" '1* -,
