Community Center Coordinator Corinne Centeno and Members of the Housing
and Human Concerns Committee Diane Howard and Michael Hitchcock presented
the recommendations for the Fiscal Year 1992/93 Budget. Ms. Centeno
advised their guidelines provided for a maximum increase of 4% for the
total budget per Council direction, and that after further discussions
the HHCC recommendation for $3,000 to Poplar Center was being withdrawn,
resulting in a total budget of $187,291.
Discussion ensued regarding Poplar Center's request for $6,559 for
programs for the disabled, and HHCC's original recommendation of $3,000.
Ms. Centeno described the really painful decision-making process in
granting limited resources to as many deserving programs as possible; and,
although Poplar Center does great work with young people, the HHCC decided
that their same clientele was being served by Kainos right here in Redwood
City. Discussion ensued regarding the Kainos request of $4,693 for garden
tools, computer, and exercise equipment for La Vista home, and the HHCC
recommendation that no money be granted at this time.
M/S: Bury/Stangel to grant $2,000 to Kainos Home and Training Center.
Councilman Claire requested the amount be raised to $3,193 to cover the
garden tools and exercise equipment for Kainos, and the mover and seconder
agreed.
M/S: BURY/STANGEL TO GRANT $3,193 TO KAINOS HOME AND TRAINING CENTER
CARRIED BY UNANIMOUS VOICE VOTE.
MINUTE ORDER NO. 92-087
M/S: STANGEL/GREENALCH TO GRANT $3,000 TO THE POPLAR CENTER
CARRIED BY UNANIMOUS VOICE VOTE.
MINUTE ORDER NO. 92-088
Council Members expressed sincere gratitude to all non-profit
organizations and stated these small amounts granted by the Council are
very necessary in this era of doing more with less.
Fernando Vega, President of Hispanos Unidos, speaking to the HHCC
recommendation of $5,000, presented highlights of the successful programs
recognized by federal, state and local agencies sponsored by Hispanos
Unidos, and asked Council to grant the request of $5,200 which is 4% over
last year's request.
M/S: BUCHAN/CLAIRE TO GRANT THE REQUEST FROM HISPANOS UNIDOS FOR $5,200
CARRIED BY UNANIMOUS VOICE VOTE.
MINUTE ORDER NO. 92-089
Eldon Luce from the Center for the Independence of the Disabled thanked
the Council for granting $8,326, a 4% increase over Fiscal year 1991/92.
Adjourned Regular Meeting Minutes
June 29, 1992 ..........
MINUTE BOOK NO. 51 Page 3
Page No. 120
--
