7. BOARD, COMMISSION AND COMMITTEE REPORTS
A. Report from the Mayor's Task Force on the Fox Theatre use and funding
(1307-01)
REPORT: City Manager, August 3, 1992
Mayor La Berge recognized and thanked the members of the Task Force and
acknowledged the many interests represented by them: City Council, City
staff, Historic Resources Advisory Committee, Civic Cultural Commission,
Peninsula Center Stage, Chamber of Commerce, Planning Commission, Senior
Affairs Commission, Hispanos Unidos and the Downtown Association.
City Manager Everett presented a short overview of the history of the task
force and its objectives: In granting $15,000 to the Civic Cultural
Commission, the Task Force wished to financially assist the Commission in
bringing more cultural events to the City; and in granting $30,000 to the
PCS, the Task Force wished to forge a partnership between the Fox Theatre
and Downtown Redwood City, to encourage historical designation, and to
foster greater cultural activity in the area.
1) M/S: Stangel/Greenalch approve an allocation of $15,000 from the general
fund to the Civic Cultural Commission to support three community cultural
events at the Fox Theatre
CARRIED BY UNANIMOUS ROLL CALL VOTE.
MINUTE ORDER NO. 92-124
2. TITLE READ. M/S: STANGEL/GREENALCH
RESOLUTION APPROVING AND AUTHORIZING EXECUTION OF AGREEMENT
WITH PENINSULA CENTER STAGE, INC., CONCERNING FOX THEATRE
Councilwoman Buchan recalled her comments made in March of this year
advising she would reach her decision on a $30,000 grant to PCS based on the
conditions of the final agreement. Councilwoman Buchan stated that since
that time the financial conditions of the City have changed due to the state
budget crisis and suggested that Council delay a decision on this
expenditure until after the state delivers its budget and the impacts on the
cities are known. Councilwoman Buchan advised that the $15,000 grant to
the Civic Cultural Commission is subject to Council review and determination
but the $30,000 grant to PCS would not be subject to Council control.
Councilman Murray advised that given the length of time the state has
delayed resolving its budget crisis, the state is bound to deliver a harsh
blow to the cities. Councilman Murray stated since the Council retains
control over the grant to the Civic Cultural Commission he could support it,
but with the $30,000 to the PCS, once the City is obligated it becomes
ineradicable. Councilman Murray suggested that no vote be taken at this
time.
MINUTE BOOK NO. 51 Regular Meeting Minutes
August 3, 1992
Page No. 160 Page 10
