MATTERS OF COUNCIL INTEREST - CONTINUED
B. Councilmembers expressed their anger and dismay at the editorial that
appeared in the Times Tribune on Sunday, September 20, 1992 stating that
Redwood City has been called Deadwood for too long, that Redwood City needs
"to bring its council up to the standards of other Peninsula Cites", and
endorsed four new candidates to encourage "sweeping change."
Councilman Stangel advised that he had no problem with the Tribune endorsing
new candidates, but deeply resented the use of the term deadwood.
Councilman Stangel offered to show the editors of the article Redwood City's
nationally award winning library, new fire house, and the new police
facility currently being constructed. Councilman Stangel described the
$500,000 that Redwood City just gave to Sequoia High School for paint
improvements, and explained that County buildings in the downtown area
limit the space available and preclude the establishment of larger stores.
Councilman Stangel described his lengthy resume of service on local and
regional committees and chairmanships and his belief that other elected
officials on the peninsula are not better than the members of this Council.
Councilman Stangel asked what standards the editors were referring to in
their article, and stated that most people do not know how much time and
energy councilmembers spend on City business and committees.
Regular Meeting Minutes
September 21, 1992 MINUTE BOOK NO. 51
Page 5 Page No. 199
.- - -- -
