Councilman Claire described the harmonious working relationship the Redwood
City Council has enjoyed over the years, which cannot be said of some other
councils on the peninsula, and addressed the issue of comparable education
and qualifications. Councilman Claire stated the Tribune's endorsement was
fine with him, but he was furious with the article's personal attack.
Councilman Claire stated the Tribune was a one-issue newspaper that had no
idea what Redwood City had been doing. Councilman Claire stated he had
written down twenty-six (26) different projects Redwood City had
accomplished or was working on in the last two years that are making the
City better, and the Tribune missed what the City has recently accomplished
by focusing only on the downtown and ignoring the effects of the current
economic conditions upon the kinds of investment the City wanted. Sequoia
Station began nine or ten years ago, and through Council perseverance is
finally under construction. Councilman Claire advised he would meet with
the editors of the Tribune soon.
Councilman Bury described the nice story the Times Tribune did about him and
stated he appreciated it very much. However, he had mixed emotions since
the same issued carried the article using the term deadwood. Councilman
Bury spoke of his real affection for Redwood City and his pride in the City
and its accomplishments, as well as his representation of the City on local
and regional organizations. Councilman Bury advised that Bay Area officials
have told him they envy the position Redwood City is in, with its reliable
and sound revenue base. Councilman Bury added that the article using the
term deadwood was unreasonable, and it hurt.
Mayor La Berge advised that two other newspapers wrote very different
articles about Redwood City's accomplishments in their editorials endorsing
candidates. Mayor La Berge stated that the Times Tribune was out of step
and insulting to Council and staff, and suggested that had the Tribune
editors asked people in Redwood City about their impressions of the City
they would have been told that they are doing very well, that there is
new building going on, and the City is getting better every day. Mayor la
Berge described good marketing techniques and asked what motivated the
subject editorial and its negative message.
Joe Staudt, Broadway, Redwood City, told Council he was proud to be a
citizen of Redwood City and reminded everyone of the new downtown parking
garage being built and the improvement of Main and Chestnut Streets, adding
that everywhere you look there is new construction going on.
Nita Spangler, Edgewood Road, Redwood City, asked why Kevin Doyle of the
Peninsula Times Tribune, is trashing the City in which he lives, and offered
to take the tape of this Council Meeting to Mr. Doyle.
Councilman Greenalch advised he had spoken with Kevin Doyle and told him the
article had been a personal affront and asked what criteria he had used to
label Redwood City, deadwood. Councilman Greenalch stated he had been
invited to write an Op Ed response, and intended to do so. Councilman
Greenalch advised it was unfortunate that the Tribune had chosen election
time for this kind of article knowing that the responses of those attacked
will be interpreted that they disagree with the newspapers right to
Regular Meeting Minutes
September 21, 1992
MINUTE BOOK NO. 51 Page 6
Page No. 200
