Jim Honjas, Vice President, merchant, on Broadway, described the positive
working relationships on the Board and its plans for promotions of the
downtown. In answer to Councilman Murray's remarks regarding certain
unfair behavior of some members of the Association, which acts as a
quasi-governmental agency, Mr. Honjas advised the new Board had no
choice but to send a registered letter to receive the financial report
on the Sunflower Festival that it needed to make its own decisions. Mr.
Honjas described his plans for promoting European-type fairs every week,
and stated that in politics when the primary is over, it is time to join
together and be friends.
Nick Buick, Director, merchant on El Camino Real, Chairman of the Goals
and Purpose Committee described their plans to 1) clean up the downtown,
2) improve business, and 3) expand markets.
Bruce Finch, Director, attorney on Broadway, described his work for the
Association, the Sunflower Festival and the upcoming gala.
Nancy Wykoff, Director, Winslow Streets, described the positive energy
of the new Board.
Joe Steinfeld, Director, merchant on Main Street, described events
leading up to the registered letter, presented the background on the
directory currently being produced and its use as a marketing tool,
the plans for a Market Day on October 21st from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, the
proposal being studied to keep stores open from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm on
Thursday nights, and advised that split votes happen on the Supreme
Court and are not necessarily harmful.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
B. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS - continued with speakers who were not scheduled on
the regular agenda.
Peter Bliznick, Executive Director, Peninsula Center Stage, thanked the
Council for their support in making PCS's Second Season a reality at the
Fox Theatre, described their three productions during the "Broadway
After Dark" season, and read from the promotional brochure which lauds
Redwood City "where magic is in the air...gracious dining abounds...fun
new shops..and live theatre is a reality." In response to Councilman
Bury's questions Mr. Bliznick described the timetable for the "neon
lights on Broadway" and the lighting of the marquee. Loretta Thomas
also spoke about the upcoming events at the Fox.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carolyn Hartman, B Street, Redwood City, commended Council for their
success in getting rid of the old Whipple Lodge and cleaning up Mezes
Park, but advised that drug dealers and prostitutes have now moved into
her neighborhood across Whipple. Councilwoman Buchan asked Mrs.
Hartman to call her at home so they could talk more about this
situation, to call her community policing officer, Paul Sheffield, right
away, and to get her neighbors together to begin the process of ridding
her neighborhood of these problems.
