<br /> Page 1 <br />BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF CIVIC CULTURAL COMMISSION <br />LARGE GRANT APPLICANTS FY 16-17 <br /> <br /> <br />Ballet America. Ballet America is a community based Ballet Company for students ages 2 - 65. <br />Funds requested are to provide funding for their annual production of “The Nutcracker” held at the <br />Fox Theater. The production includes two matinees and evening performance and is part of with <br />the annual Hometown Holiday event held annually on the first Saturday of December. <br />Funding Requested: $3,000. Funding Recommended: $1,500. <br /> <br /> <br />Bay Shore Lyric Opera Company. The Bay Shore Lyric Opera Company is a nonprofit <br />organization founded in 1996 in Northern California that serves audiences in the Greater Bay Area <br />counties. BSLO is producing the opera Marriage of Figaro by the composer Mozart for one night <br />show on July 17th, 2016 on the Courthouse Square. Admission for this opera is free. <br />Funding Requested: $2,500 Funding Recommended: $2,000 <br /> <br /> <br />Circulo Cultural/Redwood City Library Foundation. Circulo Cultural and the Redwood City <br />Library Foundation are inviting the community to participate in the 6th Annual Dia de los <br />Muertos/Day of the Dead event downtown Redwood City on Theater Way in November 2016. <br />Attendees can come and enjoy sugar skull painting, children’s activities, Catrinas face painting for <br />adults and children, altars created by families, procession, music and traditional food and treats. <br />The day emphasizes the traditional, cultural, and artistic values of the Mexican culture. Funding for <br />from the Civic Cultural Commission will help increase the capacity of the event across the board. <br />Funding Requested: $5,000. Funding Recommended: $3,000. <br /> <br /> <br />Dragon Productions Theatre Company. Dragon Productions Theatre Company is a non-profit <br />live theater production company who recently opened a new theatre in downtown Redwood City. <br />The company will use the funds they received to enhance the theatre’s technical capabilities to <br />become more of a teaching theatre. This would be a one-time update. <br />Funding Requested: $5,000. Funding Recommended: $2,500. <br /> <br /> <br />Golden Thread Productions. Golden Thread Productions is the Bay Area’s only theatre company <br />focused on the Middle East, defined broadly and inclusively. Golden Thread’s Fairytale Players will <br />present and in-school theater program assembly at then Redwood City School district schools, <br />serving approximately 5,000 Kindergarten-5th graders. Actors provide access to rarely told stories <br />and perspectives of the Middle East in a 50-minute theatrical performance followed by a talk-back <br />sessions with performers and brief dance workshop, allowing students to ask questions. <br />Funding Requested: $3,500. Funding Recommended: $2,000. <br /> <br /> <br />The Pacific Art League of Palo Alto. This group is funding a program offering free mobile digital <br />art classes at the community center of the Redwood City Police Activities League. The Pacific Art <br />League will teach twice-weekly courses to children grades 6 through 12. The program aims to <br />engage with approximately 120 students per year through eight mobile digital art courses <br />consisting of ten 1.5-hour sessions each. Students will be able to share their art via social media as <br />well as exhibiting their work at a Family Art Night. The funding received will help support this <br />program. <br />Funding Requested: $3,200 Funding Recommended: $1,500. <br /> <br /> <br />Peninsula Symphony. The Peninsula Symphony is requesting funds to support the Bridges to <br />Music in school program for students in Redwood City elementary schools. The program brings <br />6.1.A. - Page 4
