REPORT <br />To the Honorable Mayor and City Council <br />From the City Manager <br /> <br />June 27, 2016 <br /> <br />SUBJECT <br />Approval of the "Main Street Festival" as proposed by the Downtown Business Group <br />(DBG) <br /> <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />By motion, approve the "Main Street Festival" as proposed by DBG, which will be held <br />annually <br /> <br />BACKGROUND <br />Since 2006, the City has been hosting, or coordinating with outside groups to host, <br />events in Downtown Redwood City. These events primarily take place on Courthouse <br />Square and the surrounding streets. Main Street has hosted a limited number of events <br />in the past. In 2009, 2010 and 2011 the City coordinated a Jazz series that ran for eight <br />weeks each; and the Northern California Falcon Club held a car show each of the past <br />two years on Main Street. This car show is held in varying geographic locations and will <br />not be returning to Main Street. Additionally, the 4th of July Parade route has used Main <br />Street for the past several years. <br /> <br />The DBG, which is proposing this new event, the “Main Street Festival,” has experience <br />in coordinating a variety of events such as the Annual Restaurant Week; Beer & Wine <br />Booth at the Summer Concert Series; Annual Holiday Boutique on the Square; and <br />Hometown Holidays. <br /> <br /> <br />ANALYSIS <br />The DBG has the experience to coordinate a large event such as their proposed “Main <br />Street Festival”. They will still be required to obtain a majority approval from the <br />businesses on Main Street for a street closure in order to move forward. <br /> <br />The DBG is asking for the City to contribute to the event by covering the staffing costs <br />for installation of banners at the Jefferson underpass and corner of Woodside Road <br />locations. <br /> <br />Prior events on Main Street have elicited concerns from residents regarding noise, <br />traffic flow etc. With the DBG proposing music, dance performances, a car show, etc., <br />they will need to work with the residents and business owners to minimize disruption. <br />6.1.M. - Page 1
