(REPORT IS ATTACHED TO
THESE MINUTES.)
Mayor Buchan asked for information regarding Redwood City employment
advertising.
MEMO 12/22/92
In answer to Council questions, City Clerk Jorgenson advised that display
ads for recruitment to boards, committees and commissions are placed in
both papers in alternating weeks, with two weeks in the Redwood City
Almanac and one week in the Redwood City Tribune.
Franklin Eliah, Classified Advertising Manager of the Redwood City Tribune,
summarized the bid the Redwood City Tribune submitted and described the
total market concept of distributing the Redwood City Tribune to those homes
not subscribing to the Peninsula Times Tribune. In answer to Council
questions Mr. Eliah advised that The Redwood City Tribune acquired 180 paid
paid subscribers during the adjudication process, but are not actively
seeking any more subscribers as advertising is their main source of revenue;
and acknowledged that there are very few original news stories in the
Redwood City Tribune, which is a weekly newspaper.
Councilman Sanfilipo described the massive response to an article in the
Redwood City Almanac several years ago and spoke to the need for the
official newspaper to be responsible and credible.
Councilwoman La Berge asked how widely read are legal advertisements in a
free, weekly newspaper.
MINUTE BOOK NO. 51 Regular Meeting Minutes
Page No. 276 December 21, 1992
Page 5
