Michael Hitchcock, Redwood Avenue, stated that there had been no economic
justification for the large expenditures these entry features would require
and that taxable sales over the last two years did not support the premise
that more people needed to find the downtown, and that there was no
measurable economic problem to justify the proposed signs.
In response to Mayor Buchan's question, City Attorney Schricker advised that
comments should be relevant to the subject being discussed.
Pamela Hitchcock, Redwood Avenue, stated the entry feature program was a
dubious project as the downtown did not need more car traffic, but needed
more foot traffic. Mrs. Hitchcock stated downtown Redwood City is a quiet
and reasonable alternative to malls, and anything more than an archway sign
and Hamilton Street renovation would be a useless expenditure.
Peter Kostrikin, Odessa Court, spoke in favor of the historically accurate
archway sign.
Beverly Lucien, Cleveland Street, spoke in favor of the installation of at
least one historically accurate archway sign.
Erin Lucien, Cleveland Street, spoke in favor of the installation of at
least one historically accurate archway sign.
Geri Mayers, Broadway, supported installation of the archway signs to bring
back Redwood City's heritage.
Don Saye, Broadway, spoke in favor of the installation of two archway signs.
Nita Spangler, Edgewood Road, spoke in favor of the entry features program,
and advised that good historic preservation doesn't necessarily mean
replication.
Joseph Steinfeld, Broadway, complimented the consultants, but suggested the
that if the signs are to bring people to the downtown, the signs should have
the word "downtown" on them.
Joseph Staudt, Broadway, supported the entry feature program and stated the
old sign was best, although he would support the updated design.
Fernando Vega, Spring Street, stated he supported installation of the
archway sign.
Director Patterson summarized the recommendations that were before
the Council:
1) Monument at El Camino and Broadway;
2) Two updated archway signs - at Walnut and El Camino Real and on
Broadway near the railroad tracks;
3) Two street markers at Broadway and Jefferson;
Adjourned Regular Meeting Minutes
MINUTE BOOK NO. 51 January 18, 1993 -
Page No. 298 Page 6
