Phase II of the Hamilton Street and Entry Features Project
REPORT: PLANNING DIRECTOR, APRIL 12, 1993
Planning Director Patterson presented the staff report and advised that
Phase II, the design phase, will provide the necessary cost data requested
by the Council, including the replica of the Redwood City sign being drawn
by Senior Planner Charles Jany.
Councilwoman Steinfeld stated it was inappropriate to spend funds on entry
features during this period of budget uncertainty and expressed concern
about cost overruns of Redevelopment Agency ongoing projects. Councilwoman
Steinfeld asked staff to provide a financial update of the projects funded
by the 1991 Bond issue.
MEMO 4/13/93
Councilman Greenalch advised that due to the current state budget situation
this project should be put on hold at this time.
Councilmembers discussed the impacts of the entry feature program on the
downtown and on Redwood City as a whole; alternative recommendations; use of
Redevelopment Agency funds for monuments in the midst of the state's
attempts to take City and Redevelopment funds; the need to discuss whether
this program is wanted, necessary or desirable at this time; and the fact
that Council had already approved this program on January 20, 1993.
Mayor Buchan asked if any members of the audience would like to address the
Council on this subject:
Joe Steinfeld, Main Street, stated that Redevelopment funds should be used
for essential services, and the state will not listen to the City's budget
arguments if it spends $1.2 million on monuments.
Regular Meeting Minutes
April 12, 1993 MINUTE BOOK NO. 51
Page 1 Page No. 369
. -,.... . f -..
