<br /> Councilwoman Gasparini read the proclamation and presented it to Glenna <br /> Eaton, volunteer and parent of a Sequoia High student, and Steve Allen, <br /> Sequoia Hospital administrator and fund raiser. Mrs. Eaton and Mr. Allen <br /> described the event and stressedlth~.~eed for donations. <br /> Councilman Sanfilipo promised to make a contribution to the 24-Hour Relay <br /> fund if Councilman Claire would run around the track four times. Councilman <br /> Claire accepted the challenge and stated he would immediately go into <br /> training. <br /> C. Preview of Redwood City's presentation to the judges in the All America <br /> City's contest sponsored by the National Civic League Conference to be held <br /> in Tampa, Florida, May 19th through the 23rd. 102-04) <br /> Councilwoman Gasparini described Redwood City's finalist status as an All <br /> America City and introduced the presentation which was put together by <br /> volunteers and business leaders of the community. <br /> Mary Knolls of Kainos Home and Training Center introduced herself and spoke <br /> about the Kainos program. <br /> The video was played and the following people spoke about their programs and <br /> experlences: <br /> Alfred Bostic, Kainos Home and Training Center; <br /> Rocio Medrano, Sequoia Electronics Academy; <br /> Rosalina Calderon, Sequoia Electronics Academy; <br /> Marlene Bernardo, Project Read Literacy Program; <br /> Peter Williams, Project Read Literacy Program; <br /> Mayor Buchan and Councilmembers Gasparini and La Berge, members of the <br /> organization committee, expressed their thanks to everyone who had helped to <br /> prepare the presentation and stated they were honored to have played a part <br /> in this community based effort. <br /> ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- <br /> 4. WRITTEN COMMUNICATIONS <br /> A. Request from Redwood City International Sister City Program for financial <br /> assistance (301-15) <br /> Councilwoman La Berge advised that she and Councilwomen Gasparini and <br /> Steinfeld were members of the Sister City Committee that helped bring "Arts <br /> of China" to Redwood City, and the current request for $3,000 was to cover <br /> unexpected freight charges associated with that exhibit. <br /> Anita Leplin, President, Redwood City Sister City International described <br /> the business and trade benefits of sister city relationships and advised <br /> that a city in Belgium was interested in establishing just such a <br /> relationship with Redwood City. <br /> Joe Steinfeld, Main Street Merchant, spoke in favor of the cultural and <br /> economic advantages of sister city relationships and spoke in favor of <br /> granting the request of $3,000. <br /> Regular Meeting Minutes <br /> May 11, 1993 MINUTE BOOK NO. 51 <br /> Page 3 Page No. 405 <br /> '- - - <br />
