Report from the Civic Cultural Commission regarding the Fox Theatre
Councilwoman La Berge presented the Civic Cultural Commission report, and
described the original goals of the Fox Theatre Task Force: create an
atmosphere that attracts participants and improves the cultural atmosphere
in the City; work cooperatively with the theatre group and bring people to
the theatre, restaurants and other downtown establishments; support a
multicultural community; bring good things to the night life of Redwood
City; inspire and teach culture in the City; provide improved quality of
life in the community; and, retain a historical focal point in Redwood City;
Councilwoman La Berge explained the two recommendations proposed by the
Civic Cultural Commission and advised the final decision for funding the
$30,000 to the Peninsula Center Stage for three productions in FY 1993/94
would take place during the budget process in June.
Oliver Redington, Chairperson of the Civic Cultural Commission, described
the Commission's unanimous support for the two recommendations.
Peter Bliznick, Executive Director of Peninsula Center Stage, described the
importance of Redwood City's commitment to the Arts in general and the Fox
Theatre specifically, and described the need for continued funding as one
component of their financial survival.
Councilwoman Gasparini asked Mr. Bliznick to comment on PCS's other fund
raising activities, if the council could have access to financial statements
and the PCS budget, how was the $30,000 figure chosen, and did PCS have a
plan for the future to someday reach a break even point, or would they
need continuing City financial assistance.
Councilwoman Steinfeld asked Mr. Bliznick to comment on PCS's non-profit
status; the need for a complete review of PCS's financial picture and the
income and outgo; the City as shareholders and the need for accountability;
the desire to see PCS stage a concerted effort to do more with less as the
City is having to do; and the need for the Fox Theatre to be available to
the community and other groups in order to raise revenue and lessen the need
for such a large grant from the City.
Regular Meeting Minutes
MINUTE BOOK NO. 51 May 24, 1993
Page 4
Page No. 416
