1 <br /> <br />REPORT <br />To the Honorable Mayor and City Council <br />From the City Manager <br /> <br />July 25, 2016 <br /> <br />SUBJECT <br />Climate Action Plan and Environmental Initiatives Update <br /> <br />RECOMMENDATION <br />This report is for informational purposes only. There is no staff recommendation. <br /> <br />BACKGROUND <br />The City Council adopted the City of Redwood City Climate Action Plan (CAP) on April <br />22, 2013. The CAP sets a goal of a 15% reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions <br />from 2005 levels and includes measures that will allow the City to meet these goals. <br />Separate measures were identified for municipal and communitywide reductions and <br />are listed in Attachment 1. Progress updates on both municipal and communitywide <br />GHG emissions and CAP measures are included in this report. <br /> <br />Sustainability Awards <br />In 2015, the City was recognized as a sustainability leader by the Institute for Local <br />Government (ILG) and the Statewide Energy Efficiency Collaborative (SEEC), earning a <br />total of five Beacon Awards: <br />1. Platinum Spotlight Award for Best Practices Activities (Attachment 2) <br />2. Platinum Spotlight Award for Agency GHG Reductions (20%) <br />3. Silver Spotlight Award for Agency Energy Savings <br />4. Silver Spotlight Award for Agency Natural Gas Savings and <br />5. Silver Spotlight Award for Community GHG Reductions. <br />Implementing the City’s CAP was instrumental in achieving these municipal and <br />communitywide energy, natural gas, and GHG savings. <br /> <br />ANALYSIS <br />Since adoption of its CAP, the City has made steady progress on implementing the <br />measures identified in the Plan and exploring new measures to reduce municipal, <br />residential, and commercial GHG emissions. <br /> <br />4.B. - Page 1
