Councilman Spillers moved approval of payment on both progress estimates, <br />seconded by Councilman Herkner and carried. <br />COMMUNICATION CITY OF MENLO PARK WITH REGARD TO BETKA, BYBERG, SWIFT AND CHAMBERLAIN ANNEXATION, AND ABBEY, <br />SMITH AND WAOLTERS ANNEXATION. The Clerk read the letter of proposed annexation to Menlo Park, City <br />Attorney Currie stated that this was formal notification as required by law. The property is in the <br />vicinity of Lemon Avenue and Santa Crus Avenue and Lemon Avenue and Stanford Avenue. Councilman Spillers <br />moved that the letter be filed, seconded by Councilman Herkne and carried. <br />COMMUNICATION COUNTY OF SAN MATEO HEALTH DEPARTMENT WITH REGARD TO OXIDANT TESTS. The Clerk read the letter. <br />Councilman Spillers moved that the letter be filed or if there is a Committee turn this over to the Com- <br />mittee for a study, seconded by Councilman W6iss and carried. <br />COMMUNICATION CENTRAL LABOR COUNCIL WITHIESPECT TO SALES TAX WITHIN THE COUNTY. In their letter, the Central <br />Labor Council requested the Council to vote against instituting a sales tax within the County. Council- <br />man Spillers moved letter be filed and made a part of the minutes. The Mayor asked that the letter be <br />filed, and so directed the Clerk. <br />COMMUNCIATION DIVISION OF HIGHWAYS FOR CANCELLATION OF,TAXES ON A PORTION OF LOT 10, BLOCK 1, FRIEND <br />INDUSTRIAL TRACT. Councilman Spillers moved approval of the cancellation as requested, seconded by "N" <br />Councilman Stout and carried. Now <br />RESOLUTION AND/OR PROCLAMATION DECLARING THE CENTENNIAL OBSERVANCE FRCM JUNE1 THROUGH OCTCBER 31, City to <br />pick one week. The Mayor said he would pick the balance of his Committee from the Citizens Committee if <br />that was all right with the rest of the Council. The Clerk was asked to carry this on the agenda so the <br />Committee could pick a date. <br />COMMUNICATION PUBLIC UTILITIES COMMISSION REGARDING SUGGESTED PLAN FOR THE IMPROVE11ENT OF GRADE CROSSING <br />CONDITIONS IN REDWOOD CITY. Continuted from May 21 and May 28 meetings. The Clerk read the letter <br />wherein the following was stated: <br />"It appeared feasible that the City participate in the proposed installation of automatic <br />crossing gates at the rate of two crossings per year, the priority of the proposed installations <br />being as follows: <br />1. Jefferson Avenue <br />2. Chestnut Street <br />3. Spruce Street "*�I <br />4. Broadway <br />5. Main Street <br />Inasmuch as Main Street is a state highway, it will be discussed separately with the State Department <br />of Public Works, Division of Highways. It is suggested that consideration be given to the possible <br />closing -of the Maple Street and Cedar Street Crossings. <br />The purpose of this letter is to determine the City Council's position with respect to the possible <br />closing of Maple and Cedar Streets, and the installation of automatic crossing gates in the suggested <br />order of priority." <br />Councilman Granger moved to notify the Southern Pacific Company that the Council will not close any of the <br />streets, basing their decision on the fact that with a population of 40,000 people there are a very small <br />volume of streets crossing the tracks to take care of the volume of traffic, seconded by Councilman <br />Spillers. Councilman Herkner made a substitute motion that the Council will not close the two streets <br />
