The
Clerk read the following letter submitted by the City Manager:
One of the recommendations made by the National Board of Fire Underwriters at the time
Redwood City was given a Number Three rating, was the construction of a drafting pit for the
periodic testing of pumping engines.
Due to the fact that we have a very high water table, the conventional design for this
structure was found to be impractical, and the Fire Chief has had considerable difficulty
in designing a suitable structure to operate under local conditions.
Prior to the securing of final estimates, the Fire Department requested the sum of
$1750, which was appropriated in the current 1955-56 budget for this purpose, but which has
since been found to be entirely inadequate. In fact, following more complete studies, it
is now estimated that the cost will be about $3900. However, the Chief advises that this "
is somewhat less than the cost of other standard designs constructed by fire departments in
other cities.
Therefore, since there is abalance of approximately $4000 remaining unspent in the
Fire Department Capital Outlay account for 1955-56, including the $1750 originally appropri—
ated, the Fire Chief is requesting permission to use these funds, which will otherwise NOR
revert to the .general fund at the close of the fiscal year.
If concurred in by the Council, I would therefore recommend that permission be granted now
to advertise for bids for construction of a drafting pit, payment to be authorized from the
funds available in the Fire Department Capital Outlay account.
Respectfully submitted,
E. A. Rolison
Councilman Britschgi moved approval of the City Manager's recommendation, seconded by Councilman Spillers
and carried.
